Days of Palestine – Al-Bireh

Dozens of Palestinians rallied Tuesday morning in the occupied central West Bank city of Al-Bireh against the policy of abuse and repression carried out by the Israeli occupation prison administration against Palestinian detainees and support for the captive Maher Al-Akhras, who is on hunger strike for the 79th consecutive day against his administrative detention.

Palestinians demonstrated in which was organized in front of the International Red Cross headquarters in Al-Bireh, chanting slogans denouncing the Israeli policy of abuse and repression against the Palestinian prisoners, and calling on international community for urgent intervention and immediate to save their lives.

The head of the Prisoners and Executives Affairs, Qadri Abu Bakr, stressed the need to release the prisoner Maher Al-Akhras, referring to the occupation’s attempts and intelligence to dissuade him from his open hunger strike and try to break his will, but he proved heroic steadfastness for our prisoners of right and just cause.

Participants stressed their rejection of the policy of abuse and repression of the Israeli occupation against the Palestinian detainees in Israeli jails.

Maher Al-Akhras

The Israeli Supreme Court issued on Monday its final decision in the case of the Palestinian administrative detainee Maher Al-Akhras, refusing to release the Palestinian hunger-striker before 26 November.

According to the Palestinian Prisoner’s Society (PPS), al-Akhras’s lawyer has filed a request to the Court demanding his client’s immediate release. All the requests were rejected by the court over the past few weeks.

After the court’s decision, Al-Akhras announced that his hunger strike is to be continued until he is immediately released.

Al-Akhras has waged an open-ended hunger strike against the Israeli policy of "administrative detention". He has been on a hunger strike for 76 days in a row.

Since the very beginning of Al-Akhras hunger strike, he has been moved to several places, in a desperate attempt to exhaust him.

First he was held in the Hawara Detention Center, south of Nablus. Then, he was moved to the Ofer prison in Ramallah. After 30 days of his hunger strike beginning, he was moved to Ramla Clinic. Finally, he was moved to the Israeli Kaplan Hospital after a serious deterioration in his health.

The Islamic Jihad Movement in the besieged Gaza Strip has organized a sit-in on Saturday in solidarity with al-Akhras.

During the sit-in, Palestinians called on international human rights groups to urgently put pressure on the Israeli occupation authorities to save Al-Akhras’ life.
