MADRID – Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has thanked a Palestinian girl and a group of local artists in Gaza for painting a mural of him amid the devastation caused by Israel’s war on the besieged enclave, reaffirming Spain’s continued support for the Palestinian people.
In a video message shared on social media on Monday, Sánchez responded to a message from Layan, a Palestinian girl who unveiled the portrait she and fellow artists created among the ruins in Gaza.
The Spanish prime minister described the mural as a “beautiful gesture” and expressed his gratitude to the Palestinian people for what he called their affection toward Spain despite the immense suffering they continue to endure.
“In the midst of so much pain, you found a moment to send us your kindness,” Sánchez said. “To Layan, to all the boys and girls of Gaza, and to your families, I want to say something very simple: the whole of Spanish society hears you, sees you, cares about you, and does not forget you.”
Sánchez also voiced hope that Gaza’s children would one day be able to return safely to their schools and live in peace.
“I hope the children of Gaza can return to painting without fear in their schools and build a future of peace,” he said.
Spain has emerged as one of Europe’s most outspoken critics of Israel’s war on Gaza. Sánchez has repeatedly called for an immediate ceasefire, the unrestricted delivery of humanitarian aid, and greater international accountability over violations of international law committed during the war.
In May 2024, Spain formally recognized the State of Palestine alongside Ireland and Norway, arguing that recognition was essential to advancing a two-state solution and preserving prospects for lasting peace.
The Spanish government has also backed international legal efforts concerning Gaza, including proceedings before international courts, while repeatedly urging the European Union to reassess its relationship with Israel in light of the humanitarian situation in the occupied Palestinian territories.
