DayofPal—Palestinian prisoner advocacy organizations, joined by a number of formerly detained Palestinians, launched an international campaign on Tuesday to pressure Israel to stop sexual violence against Palestinian prisoners held in Israeli prisons.
The campaign was unveiled during a press conference at the Al-Bireh Municipality Hall, attended by representatives of prisoner support organizations, human rights groups, and former detainees who said they had been subjected to sexual violence, including rape, while in Israeli custody.
Organizers said the initiative comes amid an unprecedented escalation in abuses against Palestinian prisoners, particularly since the outbreak of the Gaza war.
They added that Israeli prisons have become sites of systematic torture, starvation, humiliation, and physical and psychological abuse, alongside sexual violence documented through hundreds of testimonies collected by prisoner organizations.
The groups argued that these abuses should not be viewed as isolated incidents but as part of a broader institutional policy carried out through Israel’s prison system with the aim of degrading and breaking Palestinian detainees.
According to the organizers, the campaign seeks to break the silence surrounding sexual violence against prisoners by encouraging survivors to share their experiences in a safe environment.
They also aim to transform documented testimonies into legal and human rights cases to pursue accountability for those responsible.
The campaign calls on international human rights organizations and legal bodies to investigate scenarios of sexual violence against Palestinian prisoners and to ensure accountability under international law.
