DaysofPal — Israeli occupation forces demolished the only primary school in the village of Yanoun, south of Nablus, leaving its students without a place to learn and drawing strong condemnation from Palestinian education officials.
The demolition is the latest in what Palestinian authorities describe as a systematic effort to undermine Palestinians’ right to education in vulnerable communities.
According to the Palestinian Ministry of Education and Higher Education, the Yanoun Coeducational Basic School was demolished by Israeli forces on Thursday, approximately eight months after residents of the nearby hamlet were forcibly displaced.
In a statement, the ministry said the demolition violates international humanitarian law and international conventions that protect the right to education and prohibit attacks on educational institutions.
Officials described the incident as another assault on Palestinian children, depriving them of one of their most fundamental rights.
The school served students from first through sixth grade and was the only educational facility available to children in the small and isolated community.
Its destruction has effectively deprived displaced families of nearby access to education.
Education officials said the demolition reflects a broader pattern of measures targeting the Palestinian education system, particularly in rural and marginalized communities.
They warned that such actions place additional pressure on already vulnerable families, increasing the risk of further displacement while disrupting children’s education and long-term well-being.
The ministry called on the international community, the United Nations, and human rights organizations to take immediate action to protect educational institutions and hold those responsible accountable for violations against schools and students.
Human rights advocates warn that attacks on schools not only interrupt education but also have lasting consequences for children’s development, mental health, and stability, particularly in communities already affected by displacement and limited access to essential services.
The demolition comes amid growing concern over the vulnerability of educational facilities across the occupied Palestinian territory, where repeated attacks and destruction have left many children with few or no opportunities to continue their education.
Human rights organizations have repeatedly stressed that schools are protected civilian objects under international humanitarian law and warned that continued attacks on educational institutions deepen both the humanitarian crisis and the erosion of children’s right to education.
