DaysofPal- The official spokesperson for the Hamas Movement, Hazem Qassem, emphasized on Monday that the plight of Palestinian prisoners must remain at the forefront of the Palestinian national agenda, despite the harrowing conditions and immense pressures currently faced by Palestinians in the Gaza Strip and the West Bank.
In a video statement released on Monday, Qassem said Palestinian prisoners are experiencing an “unprecedented” phase of violations inside Israeli prisons. He alleged that detainees are being subjected to killing, torture, starvation, and other serious abuses.
Qassem noted that Palestinians in Gaza, despite the destruction and hardships they continue to endure, remain committed to expressing solidarity with prisoners. He emphasized that the prisoners’ cause must remain at the forefront of national and political attention.
He called on Palestinian embassies and Palestinian political and national leadership abroad to intensify political, legal, and diplomatic efforts to keep the issue of prisoners visible on the international stage and to expose ongoing violations against detainees.
The Hamas spokesperson warned that continued silence regarding conditions inside Israeli prisons poses a serious threat to the lives of prisoners. He cited the recent death of Palestinian prisoner Imad Sarhan in Israeli custody, attributing it to a policy of medical neglect.
Qassem also referred to the case of imprisoned Palestinian doctor Hossam Abu Safiya, saying that the torture, starvation, and abuses he allegedly endured reflect the broader suffering experienced by Palestinian prisoners in Israeli detention facilities.
He warned that without effective action from the international community and human rights organizations, violations inside Israeli prisons would continue and more detainees could lose their lives. According to Qassem, the issue places political and moral responsibilities on international actors and institutions.
On Sunday, Palestinian prisoner advocacy groups announced the death of Imad Rajeh Mustafa Sarhan, 48, from the occupied city of Haifa, inside Israel’s Gilboa Prison after spending more than 24 years in Israeli detention.
