DayofPal—Israel-backed gang abducted two ambulance crew members from the Palestinian Red Crescent Society on Tuesday morning at an established checkpoint near Wadi Gaza on Salah Al-Din Street in central Gaza.
The two paramedics were Ahmed Abu Rayya and Waseem Al-Mughari.
The two were in a Red Crescent ambulance and returning home when members of the gang surprisingly obstructed their way and attacked the ambulance.
According to reports from UN Human Rights (OHCHR), the attack also involved the detention of several Palestinians passing through the area, including emergency medical personnel.
The Palestinian Red Crescent Society said that seven of its ambulance crew members were initially detained during the attack.
Five were later released, while the remaining two were taken to an unknown location. Their fate and whereabouts remain unknown as of the latest update, the organization added.
In a statement, the PRCS described the situation as unacceptable and called for the immediate release of its detained staff, emphasizing that medical personnel must be protected at all times and allowed to carry out their duties without obstruction.
The organization also expressed concern over repeated reports of the assaults by Israel-backed gang in the Gaza Strip.
Israel has not publicly responded to these specific attacks, but previously declared it backs the groups against Palestinian resistance.
Under international law, occupying powers are required to ensure public order and safety and to prevent interference with humanitarian and medical services, the organization said.
