DayofPal— A new photo for Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya shows him appearing before Israel’s High Court of Justice in occupied Jerusalem for the first time in months.
His photo has spoken of harsh detention conditions in Israeli prisons, in which signs of torture, starvation, and humiliation visibly appear on his body, in stark contrast to his appearance before he was taken into Israeli custody.
The Palestinian doctor Abu Safiya conveyed a message through his lawyer, from his latest court hearing today, saying:
“I am a pediatrician providing medical care to patients, the wounded, and the vulnerable in Gaza. I carried out my duties in accordance with IHL and humanitarian principles. My detention is unjust and arbitrary.”
His son warned this week that the life of Dr. Abu Safiya, the director of Kamal Adwan Hospital, is in grave danger.
He has been held in Israeli detention since December 2024 after refusing to abandon his patients in northern Gaza.
The family says Israeli authorities transferred him to solitary confinement in Nafha Prison in retaliation for filing a legal appeal with Israel’s High Court.
According to the family, Dr. Abu Safiya is being held in a two-meter cell, forcibly starved like thousands of other Palestinian prisoners, and denied basic necessities, including clean water, medicine, and access to his lawyer.
