Slovenia’s New PM Removes Palestinian Flag in Major Policy Shift Toward Israel
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

DayofPal—Slovenia’s newly elected Prime Minister, Janez Janša, has ordered the removal of the Palestinian flag from the main government building in Ljubljana, marking a significant shift in the country’s stance on Israel and Palestine.

The Palestinian flag had flown alongside Slovenian and European flags for the past two years under the previous government led by Robert Golob.

The decision was implemented shortly after Janša assumed office, signaling a move away from Slovenia’s recent pro-Palestinian policies.

Janša, a longtime supporter of Israel, has criticized Slovenia’s recognition of Palestine and repeatedly expressed support for Israel. He has also advocated relocating Slovenia’s embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.

Israel welcomed the development, with Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar thanking Janša and announcing plans to open an Israeli embassy in Ljubljana.

Former Prime Minister Golob condemned the flag’s removal, saying it represented not only solidarity with Palestinians but also values of justice, dignity, humanity, and peace.

He described the move as a symbolic reversal of Slovenia’s recent efforts to hold Israel accountable for its attacks in the Gaza Strip.

During Golob’s tenure, Slovenia recognized Palestine as a state, imposed restrictions on weapons trade with Israel, and sanctioned Israeli officials over policies related to the Gaza war.

The removal of the Palestinian flag is widely viewed as the first visible sign of a new foreign policy direction under Janša’s government.
