DayofPal– Ayoung Palestinian student was killed by an Israeli drone strike as he stepped out to buy deserts to celebrate his academic achievement in high school.
Khaled Al-Bareem, a student from the southern Gaza Strip, was killed on Sunday when an Israeli surveillance drone fired at him directly in the Mawasi Khan Younis area, near Street 5.
According to eyewitnesses, Al-Bareem had left his home to buy sweets in celebration of passing his Tawjihi (General Secondary Education) exams, moments before the fatal strike.
According to people close to the family, there had been no celebratory atmosphere at his home because two of his uncles had been killed just two weeks earlier.
Neighbors and relatives who came to congratulate were trying to lift his spirits and pushing him to move forward.
They encouraged him to go out and buy some sweets, saying “Life goes on” and “The living must carry on.”
He left the tent to buy the sweets and was then struck in the attack.
A video circulating on social media shows mourners carrying his body to Nasser Medical Complex in Khan Younis, where he was pronounced dead.
Al-Bareem’s death comes shortly after the Palestinian Ministry of Education announced the high school (Tawjihi) results, achieved under extraordinarily difficult conditions.
Many students in Gaza, including those displaced multiple times, continued their studies despite the destruction of the majority of schools by Israeli bombardment during the war.
“Students were studying while displaced, under tents and in unsafe conditions, yet they persisted,” education officials noted, highlighting the resilience of Gaza’s youth amid ongoing aggression.
Al-Bareem killing underscores the fragile and repeatedly breached nature of the ceasefire agreement that took effect on October 10, 2025, in which Israel continues to kill civilians, including students and everyday residents going about their lives.
Palestinian health ministry reported that 1,191 Palestinians have been killed and 3,853 others injured in Israeli attacks across the Gaza Strip since the truce was declared.
Just on Saturday, four Palestinians were killed and 23 wounded in separate Israeli assaults.
