DaysofPal- The Ministry of Health in Gaza has announced that 50 patients suffering from Thalassemia have died in the Gaza Strip amid deteriorating healthcare conditions and the continued impact of the ongoing Israeli genocide and suffocating siege.
In a statement released Saturday, the ministry said that thalassemia patients are facing extremely critical health conditions, as the collapse of the medical system and shortages of essential supplies have severely disrupted treatment.
The announcement coincided with the observance of World Thalassemia Day.
According to the ministry, patients are enduring compounded suffering, with their treatment journeys turning into a daily struggle for survival.
This is largely due to a lack of specialized medications, a shortage of laboratory testing supplies, and a severe deficit in available blood units required for ongoing care.
The ministry reported that 50 out of 334 registered patients have died during the course of the conflict, while 47 others have left Gaza, reflecting the worsening prospects for consistent treatment.
Currently, 237 patients remain in Gaza, including 52 children under the age of 12 and 185 individuals above that age, highlighting the ongoing burden of the disease across multiple age groups.
Officials also pointed to the Israeli destruction of laboratory infrastructure and the absence of diagnostic equipment, which has hindered the ability to conduct preventive, diagnostic, and therapeutic testing.
This, they warned, could lead to undetected new cases and undermine years of progress in disease prevention.
The ministry called on international health organizations to intensify urgent interventions, with a focus on saving thalassemia patients in Gaza, describing the current conditions as dire and life-threatening, with long-term implications for the spread and management of the disease.
