DayofPal—Newnham College has agreed to divest from companies linked to Israeli occupation, genocide, and fossil fuel production.
The move comes months following sustained campaigning by students, staff, and alumni.
The decision marks a significant milestone for activists who launched the “Newnham for Palestine” campaign in October 2025, citing concerns over the College’s indirect investments in firms allegedly connected to human rights violations and environmental harm.
Campaigners estimated that at least £20 million of the College’s funds were tied to corporations providing surveillance technology, artificial intelligence systems, military equipment, and infrastructure services associated with Israeli state operations, as well as fossil fuel companies.
In response to mounting pressure, including an open letter signed by hundreds within the Cambridge community, the College Council established a working group in December 2025 to review its passive investments and revise its statement of investment principles.
The updated framework is expected to guide divestment from companies linked to violations of international law, occupation, and fossil fuel extraction.
The Council also pledged to push for greater transparency within the Cambridge University Endowment Fund, whose holdings are not publicly disclosed.
While campaigners welcomed the move as a breakthrough, they stressed that continued oversight would be necessary to ensure the College fully implements its commitments.
