DaysofPal– Intense overnight rainfall flooded camps housing displaced Palestinians across the Gaza Strip, submerging temporary shelters and aggravating an already severe humanitarian crisis, local emergency authorities said on Tuesday.
Civil defense units in Rafah reported numerous emergency calls after heavy downpours inundated tents overnight, leaving residents trapped in frigid, water-soaked conditions.
In a short statement, rescue teams said several families were evacuated after floodwaters overwhelmed their shelters in the coastal Al-Mawasi area near Khan Younis.
The storms are linked to a cold low-pressure system moving across Palestine, which has brought sharp temperature drops and intermittent rain to large parts of the region since Monday.
Humanitarian organizations warn that successive bouts of cold and rain are worsening an already catastrophic situation.
More than 1.5 million people remain displaced in overcrowded camps with minimal services after months of conflict, blockade, and widespread destruction of homes and infrastructure.
Many families are attempting to survive winter conditions in fragile tents that provide little defense against wind and rain.
Shortages of heating, dry blankets, clean water, and sanitation facilities are increasing the risk of illness and exposure.
The crisis has deepened amid ongoing hostilities and tight restrictions on aid deliveries, while reconstruction remains largely stalled despite provisions for rebuilding included in a ceasefire agreement reached in October 2025.
Emergency responders say immediate aid, including waterproof shelter materials, blankets, and medical assistance, is critical to prevent further hardship as winter storms continue to pound the enclave.
