DaysofPal- Since October 2023, Israeli Occupation Forces (IOF) have detained 94 Palestinian journalists and media workers, according to a report by the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ), 60 are from the West Bank and 33 from the Gaza Strip.
The report ranked the Israeli occupation as the third-worst jailer of journalists worldwide in 2025.
As of early December 2025, 29 journalists remained in detention, most without formal charges under administrative detention policies.
The Palestinian Journalists’ Syndicate documented 42 new arrests of journalists during 2025 alone.
Interviews with 59 released journalists revealed that 98% reported experiencing some form of abuse while in custody.
Documented violations included severe physical torture, resulting in permanent injuries and fractures, and forced painful positions for prolonged periods.
Journalists also reported deliberate starvation, denial of medical care, and psychological abuse, including continuous threats and prolonged exposure to loud noise or music intended for isolation and psychological pressure.
Some cases involved sexual violence, including harassment and threats of rape within detention facilities.
The report stated that these practices are part of a deliberate policy to intimidate media workers and suppress independent reporting from Gaza and the West Bank.
The Committee called on the international community to conduct a comprehensive independent investigation into the detention conditions of Palestinian journalists and to pressure the Israeli occupation to grant international monitors access to detention centers, including the Sde Teyman military prison.
The report also urged the removal of restrictions on local and foreign journalists to ensure transparency and independent media coverage.
Violations escalated in January 2026, with more than 69 incidents documented, including the killing of three journalists, shootings, and threats preventing coverage under armed intimidation.
Since the start of the war, 256 journalists have been killed, including 63 in 2025 alone, prompting international organizations to demand independent investigations and increased access for observers to detention facilities.
