DaysofPal – Hamas has strongly condemned the U.S. Treasury Department’s decision to impose sanctions on several Palestinian institutions and figures active in advocacy and humanitarian relief.
In a statement issued on Thursday, Hamas said the decisions are unjust and oppressive and were made based on incitement by the criminal Zionist entity, which continues its open war against the Palestinian people and their national cause.
The movement stressed that the U.S. Treasury’s measures will further entrench the suffering of the Palestinian people in the Gaza Strip, suffering created by the Israeli occupation.
Hamas called on the U.S. administration to reverse these occupation-biased measures and to work toward compelling Israel to meet the obligations it has already agreed to, including opening border crossings, allowing the entry of humanitarian aid and shelter supplies, and enabling the national committee to carry out its responsibilities urgently.
On Wednesday, the United States announced the imposition of sanctions on the Popular Conference for Palestinians Abroad, in addition to six charitable organizations operating in the Gaza Strip, accusing them of acting on behalf of Hamas.
The U.S. State Department claimed in a statement that these institutions “purport to provide medical care to Palestinian civilians, while in reality supporting the Izz ad-Din al-Qassam Brigades,” the military wing of Hamas.
It further alleged that the Popular Conference for Palestinians Abroad engages in deceptive fundraising practices and provides covert support to the resistance, thereby undermining aid intended for civilians.
On its official website, the U.S. Treasury Department described the Popular Conference for Palestinians Abroad as one of the main organizers of recent flotillas that sought to break the Israeli security blockade imposed on the Gaza Strip. It also alleged that the conference was founded and managed by figures from Hamas’s International Relations Office, formerly headed by Mousa Abu Marzouk.
For its part, the Popular Conference for Palestinians Abroad strongly condemned the U.S. decision. Majed al-Zeer, Deputy Head of the Conference’s General Assembly, said the move represents a further blind escalation of U.S. policy in providing unconditional support for the Israeli occupation and its arbitrary, illegal, and inhumane practices against the Palestinian people.
Al-Zeer described the sanctions as an attempt to restrict Palestinian activity and suppress the ongoing popular movement to reclaim national rights within the framework of international law. He called for an immediate review of the unjust and unfair decision, stressing that the move lacks even the minimum legal standards required to assess the reality of the work carried out by Palestinian institutions.
He affirmed that the Popular Conference for Palestinians Abroad is a grassroots organization operating globally wherever Palestinians are present, organizing activities and events with members drawn from across the full spectrum of Palestinian society, across generations and backgrounds, and remains an integral part of the Palestinian people’s struggle to restore their legitimate rights.
