DaysofPal- Heavy rainfall early Tuesday flooded tents sheltering displaced families across the Gaza Strip and caused hundreds of them to be swept away, as a powerful low-pressure weather system has battered the area since Monday evening.
Rainwater also leaked into several sections of Al-Shifa Medical Complex in Gaza City, particularly the reception and emergency department, forcing a disruption of services.
Hundreds of thousands of residents in Gaza are facing this grim reality while living in fragile, makeshift tents and lacking the most basic necessities of life, including blankets and winter clothing to protect them and their children from harsh weather and winter conditions.
The suffering of displaced families continues to worsen amid the deep low-pressure system, heavy rainfall, and strong winds sweeping the Strip.
Gaza Civil Defense spokesperson Mahmoud Basal warned that thousands of homes partially destroyed during the Israeli genocide are at risk of collapsing at any moment due to heavy rain and powerful winds.
“These homes pose a serious threat to the lives of hundreds of thousands of Palestinians who have no alternative shelter,” Basal said, adding that “We have repeatedly warned the world, but to no avail.”
The Palestinian Meteorological Department stated that the country will continue to be affected by the low-pressure system on Tuesday, with temperatures expected to drop and conditions remaining partly cloudy and cold, particularly in mountainous areas.
Scattered rain showers are expected across most areas, possibly accompanied at times by thunderstorms and hail.
During the evening and nighttime hours, rainfall chances will decrease, accompanied by moderate southeasterly to northwesterly winds and moderate sea conditions.
On Tuesday night, the weather is expected to remain partly cloudy and cold, with a continued chance of light, scattered rainfall in some areas. Winds will be south-westerly to north-westerly at moderate speed, and sea conditions will remain moderate.
On Wednesday, the weather is expected to be partly cloudy with a further drop in temperatures, remaining cold, particularly in mountainous regions.
The Meteorological Department forecast scattered rain showers over some areas, especially in the south, possibly accompanied by thunderstorms until midday. Winds will be northwesterly to northeasterly, moderate and occasionally active, with moderate sea conditions.
The Meteorological Department warned residents during the low-pressure system of the risk of flash floods in valleys and low-lying areas, particularly in southern and eastern regions, slippery roads, reduced visibility, and low temperatures.
Weather observer Assem Asayda had earlier warned of renewed flood risks in the Gaza Strip beginning Monday, as part of the cold low-pressure system affecting the region.
