Hilltop Youth Attacks Surge in West Bank Amid Ben-Gvir’s Support
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

DayofPal—The West Bank has been raging for years, but recent months have seen an alarming escalation as Israeli settler’s attacks are surging, driven by extremist youth known as the “Hilltop Youth.”

The extremist group has grown into a serious threat to both Palestinian and Israeli security. Once dismissed as reckless teenagers, these groups, now dubbed by Israeli media as the “Barbarians of the Hills”, have evolved into organized extremists emboldened by political backing and government leniency, especially from Israel’s National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir.

A recent investigation by Yedioth Ahronoth revealed that the Israeli army is increasingly losing control over these groups. Their attacks have targeted Palestinians, farmland, and property, but also Israeli soldiers and civilians who attempted to intervene.

Incidents include stabbings, livestock slaughter, tree and crop destruction, and the burning of both military and civilian vehicles.

Army officers acknowledge that the attacks surged following the release of 74 Palestinians in recent prisoner exchanges. The extremist youth, they say, seized this moment to exact revenge on Palestinians and assert dominance within settlements.

Some attacks have even targeted Israeli soldiers attempting to enforce the law, signaling that the chaos has spun beyond traditional control measures.

“These are not impulsive acts,” one officer told the paper. “They are deliberate, ideological attacks, sadistic in nature and aimed at intimidating anyone who stands in their way, Palestinian or Israeli.”

Statistics cited in the investigation show a disturbing trend: 92 violent incidents in June, 70 in July, and 40 in August, ranging from vehicle arsons and tire slashings to stone-throwing, ramming attacks, and assaults on police stations and military facilities.

Many settlers themselves have voiced alarm, accusing the government of creating a sense of impunity. They argue that Ben-Gvir’s implicit encouragement, and Defense Minister Israel Katz’s decision to halt the use of administrative detention against Jewish extremists, have emboldened the Hilltop Youth and fueled chaos within settlements.

Some of the worst attacks has turned inward. In one incident near the settlement of Kochav Hashachar, Hilltop Youth members attacked a fellow settler, smashing his car windows and slashing his tires after he tried to stop them from approaching Palestinian homes.

The growing lawlessness has left many settlers fearful for their own safety. “What began as a small youth movement,” one local resident said, “has become an anarchic force that threatens the entire fabric of life here.”
