DaysofPal—The international medical humanitarian organization Médecins Sans Frontières (Doctors Without Borders) has warned that the healthcare infrastructure in the Gaza Strip has suffered severe damage as a result of the ongoing Israeli genocide, which began on October 7, 2023.
In a statement released on Wednesday, Aitor Zabal-Gogía Zekua, an MSF official, said that medical workers in Gaza are enduring the same hardships as the rest of the civilian population under what he described as a “continuing genocide.”
“We have lost 15 of our colleagues over the past two years. This is devastating for us,” Zabal-Gogia said.
He explained that the health system in Gaza has been decimated, with some hospitals completely out of service and others partially destroyed and inaccessible to patients.
“The few hospitals still operating are forced to function outside their main facilities and are utterly exhausted,” he added.
The MSF emergency coordinator noted that hospitals are struggling to generate electricity, access clean water, and secure chlorine, fuel, and food for patients. He described the situation of healthcare workers as “completely exhausting,” as they continue to face constant bombardment and deteriorating working conditions.
On September 26, MSF announced the suspension of its operations in Gaza City due to the escalating Israeli bombardment.
“We had no choice but to suspend our activities after Israeli forces surrounded our clinics,” said Jacob Grange, MSF’s emergency coordinator, in a previous statement.
For 733 consecutive days, the Israeli occupation forces have continued their large-scale military operations across the Gaza Strip, with widespread air and artillery strikes that have targeted civilian areas, killed thousands, and deepened the humanitarian catastrophe.
MSF reiterated its call for the protection of medical facilities and personnel, stressing that access to healthcare is a fundamental humanitarian right that must be upheld even in times of conflict.
