DaysofPal — The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) has declared that the Gaza Strip has become “the hungriest place on Earth.”
OCHA spokesperson Jens Laerke confirmed that the UN is fully prepared to deliver immediate and large-scale humanitarian aid to Gaza. “We have nearly 180,000 mobile platforms of food and other life-saving supplies ready and waiting to enter Gaza,” he said.
Laerke emphasized that donors worldwide have already funded the aid, which has cleared customs, received approval, and is awaiting delivery. “We can deliver assistance into Gaza immediately and at scale,” he affirmed.
However, he warned that “time is running out very fast, and lives are being lost every hour.” He pointed out that the UN has already demonstrated its capacity to deliver aid efficiently, referencing the temporary ceasefire period during which tens of thousands of trucks successfully entered Gaza.
Meanwhile, Michael Fakhri, the UN Special Rapporteur on the Right to Food, issued a powerful call for action, urging the UN General Assembly to intervene, break the blockade, and stop the starvation of 2.3 million Palestinians. He stated unequivocally:
“Israel is using hunger as a weapon against civilians in Gaza.”
According to the UN, this strategy of deliberate starvation is not only a violation of international law but also a means to pave the way for forced displacement. Since March 2, Israel’s closure of Gaza’s border crossings to humanitarian aid — particularly food — has pushed 2.4 million people toward famine.
