At least 11 Palestinians were killed and several others wounded Thursday evening when an Israeli airstrike targeted a vehicle belonging to personnel assigned to secure humanitarian aid convoys near the Al-Saraya junction in central Gaza City — one of the enclave’s most crowded areas.
The targeted vehicle was assisting in the protection of aid distribution in an area heavily reliant on limited humanitarian access. The strike comes amid an ongoing humanitarian catastrophe, with Gaza plunged into extreme food insecurity and a collapsing aid system.
Over the past months, humanitarian convoys have repeatedly been attacked or looted by desperate individuals and armed groups, depriving hundreds of thousands of Palestinians of desperately needed food and medical supplies.
The Israeli occupation has also been accused of deliberately fostering instability by systematically targeting police stations, local aid committees, and security teams tasked with ensuring safe distribution. These community-formed structures had emerged to manage aid fairly amid the collapse of formal institutions.
As prices for basic goods soar across the Strip, international warnings about widespread famine continue to grow — especially in northern Gaza, where starvation is rampant, and in the overcrowded south, now sheltering nearly two million displaced people.
The latest attack adds to the devastation of Gaza’s humanitarian infrastructure, as Israel’s war on the besieged territory enters its 601st day.
