DaysofPal- In a pointed response to U.S. President Donald Trump’s recent remarks, the “National Campaign” to Recover the Bodies of Martyrs has highlighted his hypocrisy, drawing attention to the Israeli longstanding practice of holding the remains of hundreds of Palestinians.
Trump, in a threatening message directed at Gaza last Wednesday evening, condemned the detention of Israeli prisoners’ bodies by the resistance in Gaza, labeling those responsible as “sick and perverted.” However, the campaign argues that this critique should equally apply to Israeli occupation, which currently holds the bodies of 665 Palestinians.
The Reality of Israeli Detention of Palestinian Remains
According to the National Campaign, the number of documented Palestinian bodies detained by Israeli occupation has reached 665, with these remains scattered across so-called “numbered cemeteries” and refrigeration units maintained by the occupation forces. Among them are:
• 259 Palestinians martyred since October 7, 2023, during the latest wave of Israeli aggression against Gaza.
• 67 Palestinian prisoners who died while incarcerated in Israeli jails under questionable circumstances.
• 59 children under the age of 18 and 9 female martyrs, underscoring Israeli indiscriminate targeting of all segments of Palestinian society.
Additionally, the campaign notes that these figures likely underestimate the true scale of the issue, citing unconfirmed reports from Israeli sources suggesting that over 1,500 Palestinian bodies may be held at the Sde Teiman camp in southern occupied Palestine.
A Historical Pattern of Abuse
The National Campaign reminded Trump and the international community that the Israeli crime of detaining Palestinian bodies is not new. This policy dates back to the 1960s and 1970s, continuing unabated for decades. By withholding the remains of martyrs, Israeli occupation denies families the right to bury their loved ones according to cultural and religious traditions—a violation of both human rights and international law.
Furthermore, the campaign criticized the lack of transparency surrounding the fate of many other bodies detained in Gaza since the onset of the latest conflict. Without accurate information, families remain in limbo, unable to grieve or seek closure.
Hypocrisy in Trump’s Criticism
While Trump’s comments were aimed squarely at the resistance groups in Gaza, the National Campaign contends that his condemnation fails to acknowledge Israeli parallel crimes. If detaining bodies is indeed an act of depravity, as Trump suggests, then the Israeli occupation must also be held accountable for its role in perpetuating such practices.
This double standard reflects broader concerns about selective outrage in discussions of humanitarian issues in the Middle East. While global attention often focuses on the plight of Israeli captives, the suffering of Palestinian families denied the return of their loved ones is frequently unnoticed or ignored.
A Call for Accountability
The National Campaign urged the international community to adopt a consistent stance on the treatment of human remains in conflicts. It called for pressure on the Israeli occupation to release the detained bodies and allow Palestinian families to honor their dead. At the same time, it emphasized the need for dialogue and mutual respect in resolving disputes related to prisoners and detainees.
As debates around war ethics continue, the case of the detained Palestinian bodies serves as a stark reminder of the enduring injustices faced by Palestinians. Whether through diplomatic channels or legal mechanisms like the International Criminal Court (ICC), accountability must extend beyond rhetoric to ensure justice for all victims of conflict.
Will the world heed this call for fairness and equality in addressing the sensitive issue of human remains? The answer will shape perceptions of morality and impartiality in one of the most polarizing conflicts of our time.
