DaysofPal- In a chilling account of systematic torture and abuse, newly released Palestinian prisoners following the Gaza ceasefire deal revealed harrowing testimonies of their inhuman treatment in Israeli detention facilities.

The Prisoners’ Media Office said that the difficult condition of the released prisoners is a testament to the brutal practices endured during their detention.

The Office issued a press statement on Monday condemning the Israeli ill-treatment of Palestinian prisoners, stating that their bodies bear witness to years of systematic torture and medical neglect.

Torture Claims

The released prisoners recounted experiences of severe beatings, deliberate medical negligence, and prolonged solitary confinement—practices aimed at breaking their will. Among them was Wael Jumaa Jumaa from Gaza, whose body bore visible signs of abuse sustained during his imprisonment.

Another elderly prisoner, Ghaleb al-Radi from northern Gaza, also exhibited the effects of prolonged mistreatment.

One particularly harrowing story came from Adel Subaih, who described how he was taken hostage as a human shield during his arrest at Al-Shifa Medical Complex in Gaza City last year. Subaih revealed that he suffered internal bleeding after being beaten in his leg by Israeli forces.

Upon waking up in an Israeli hospital, he was informed that amputation was necessary to save his life—a decision he made under duress due to the lack of alternative care options.

Health Crisis Among Released Prisoners

Upon their release, four prisoners from the sixth batch of the exchange deal were immediately transferred to hospitals in Ramallah due to critical health conditions exacerbated by medical neglect during their incarceration.

These cases underscore what rights organizations describe as Israel’s transformation of its prisons into “systematic torture centers.”
The Euro-Mediterranean Human Rights Monitor condemned the situation, labeling these facilities as “graves for the living.”

It highlighted the dire consequences faced by detainees, including torture, ill-treatment, and humiliating violations that persisted until moments before their release.

Mass Release Under Ceasefire Understandings

As part of the ceasefire agreements following the October 7 conflict, Israel has released 766 prisoners across five batches since negotiations began.

This includes children, women, individuals serving life sentences, and those arrested post-October 7, 2023. Last Saturday, the sixth batch saw the liberation of 369 prisoners, comprising 333 from Gaza and 36 serving life terms.

Despite this mass release, concerns remain over the long-term impact of the psychological and physical trauma inflicted upon these individuals. Rights advocates warn that the scars left behind extend beyond the visible injuries, affecting both the prisoners and their families for generations.

International Response

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) facilitated the transfer of some prisoners back to Gaza, including Adel Subaih, ensuring their safe return despite the challenging circumstances.

However, human rights groups continue to call for greater accountability regarding Israel’s treatment of Palestinian detainees, urging compliance with international law and conventions prohibiting torture and inhumane treatment.
