Palestinian Journalist Details Horrific Detention Conditions in Israeli Custody

DaysofPal- In a heart-wrenching testimony, Palestinian journalist Yousef Sharaf, 37, has revealed the harrowing ordeal he endured during his detention in Israeli prisons, only to return to a life shattered by unimaginable loss.

Sharaf, recently released as part of a prisoner exchange deal between Hamas and Israel, is grappling with the trauma of his imprisonment and the devastating news that his entire family—37 members, including his wife, son, and four daughters—were killed in an Israeli airstrike on Gaza’s Yarmouk neighborhood in October 2023.

Sharaf, an editor with the Shehab News Agency, was arrested by Israeli forces in March 2024 while seeking refuge at Al-Shifa Hospital in Gaza City.

His detention came just months after the airstrike that wiped out his family, compounding his grief with the physical and psychological toll of imprisonment.

Sharaf described the conditions inside Israeli prisons as “horrific,” alleging systematic abuse and neglect by Israeli authorities.

“We were subjected to humiliation, terror, and deprivation of basic necessities like water and adequate medical care,” he said.

“The lack of food and the spread of diseases like boils and itching made life unbearable. Some detainees died due to medical negligence.” He continued.

Sharaf believes his arrest and mistreatment were directly linked to his work as a journalist, which focused on exposing Israeli crimes against Palestinians. “I was punished for telling the truth, for shedding light on the suffering of my people,” he said.

His release last Saturday, part of a broader exchange deal, has brought little solace. Sharaf now faces the daunting task of rebuilding his life while mourning the loss of his loved ones.

His story underscores the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Gaza and the plight of Palestinian detainees in Israeli prisons, drawing renewed attention to the human cost of the conflict.

As Sharaf attempts to piece together his shattered memories, his testimony serves as a stark reminder of the enduring resilience—and suffering—of the Palestinian people.

Sharaf has revealed the brutal treatment endured by detainees in Israeli prisons, including journalists and doctors, shedding light on the systemic abuse faced by Palestinians under occupation.

Sharaf, who was recently released as part of a prisoner exchange deal, described undergoing a makeshift knee surgery performed by a detained doctor from Nasser Hospital using “a blade and chlorine,” without anesthesia or painkillers.

“The Negev prison administration refused to provide medicine or any form of pain relief,” Sharaf told Palestine newspaper. “They told me, ‘Let Hamas give you.’”

Sharaf’s testimony highlights the dire conditions faced by Palestinian detainees, particularly journalists and medical professionals.

He emphasized that journalists are specifically targeted for their work, with prison authorities accusing them of having ties to Gaza’s leadership.

“They told us, ‘You, by virtue of your work, have relations with the rulers of Gaza, and you are the ones from whom we need information,’” Sharaf recounted.

Despite enduring months of interrogation and abuse, Sharaf stated that no formal charges were ever filed against him or many other detained journalists. “We are just journalists, and that is why we were arrested,” he said.

The moment of his release, Sharaf recalled, came as part of a prisoner exchange deal, a moment he and fellow detainees had been anxiously awaiting.

“We suffer every day inside the prisons, and we were waiting for the moment when we would be released to continue the path of resistance,” he said.

Sharaf’s resilience is fueled by the memory of his family, who paid the ultimate price for their commitment to the Palestinian cause. Among the 37 family members killed in an Israeli airstrike in October 2023 were his parents, wife, four children, brothers, and their families.

“My family made sacrifices for the sake of God and the homeland,” Sharaf said, vowing to continue his journalistic work to expose Israeli crimes in the Palestinian territories.

A Broader Crisis for Palestinian Journalists

Sharaf’s case is emblematic of the broader persecution faced by Palestinian journalists under Israeli occupation.

According to the Palestinian Government Media Office in Gaza, more than 205 Palestinian journalists have been killed since 2023, with hundreds more arrested and dozens still languishing in Israeli prisons.

The targeting of journalists, coupled with the inhumane treatment of detainees, has drawn widespread condemnation from human rights organizations.

Sharaf’s story underscores the urgent need for international attention to the plight of Palestinian prisoners and the ongoing violence against media workers in the region.

As Sharaf begins to rebuild his life, his determination to continue reporting on Israeli atrocities serves as a powerful reminder of the resilience of the Palestinian people and their unwavering commitment to justice and freedom.
