DayofPal– Ceasefire talks are under way for the release of 33 Israeli captives by Hamas in exchange for the release of a number of Palestinian prisoners, who will be determined after knowing the number of living and dead captives, the Yedioth Ahronoth newspaper reports quoting a senior Israeli official.
“This time there is optimism and [the deal] seems closer than ever,” the official said.
Mediators have seen signals of progress in efforts of ceasefire talks as US president-elect Donald Trump has also sending his envoy to monitor the talks.
The US President-elect Donald Trump’s envoy arrived in Israel on a surprise visit carrying a message that an agreement must be reached before the inauguration on January 20, Israeli Channel 12 reported.
Meanwhile, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has taken a significant step toward advancing the negotiations with Hamas by approving the involvement of his high-ranking officials in talks held in Qatar, according to Israeli media.
Among those heading to Doha is Mossad’s director, David Barnea, marking a pivotal moment as top-level Israeli decision-makers now play a direct role in the discussions. Accompanying him will be the head of the Shin Bet internal security agency and key military and political advisers.
Netanyahu’s office announced the decision after a strategic meeting with Israel’s defense minister, security chiefs, and negotiators, emphasizing collaboration with both the outgoing Biden administration and President-elect Donald Trump’s incoming team.
A photo released by Netanyahu’s office captured the prime minister alongside Steve Witkoff, Trump’s incoming Middle East envoy, who was also in Qatar this week. Meanwhile, the families of over 100 captives held in Gaza are intensifying pressure on Netanyahu to secure their release, fearing that opportunities for a deal are slipping away.
The urgency is echoed by U.S. officials, with Secretary of State Antony Blinken, speaking from Paris, expressing optimism about the negotiations. Blinken noted that an agreement was “very close” and hoped it would materialize before Trump’s inauguration on January 20.
Central to the talks are complex issues: the sequencing of captive releases, the identity of Palestinian prisoners to be freed, and the potential scale of Israeli troop withdrawals from Gaza’s civilian areas.
The stakes are high, as the devastating toll of Israel’s genocide since October 7, 2023, continues to mount, with Gaza’s Health Ministry reporting over 46,500 Palestinian deaths and 109,571 injuries.
The coming days will be critical, with all sides under immense international pressure to strike a deal that could mark a turning point in the region’s turmoil.
