DayofPal– Sky News has provoked widespread outrage online following a headline on Monday that referred to Israeli soldiers as “teenage victims,” while downplaying the deaths of Palestinians in an Israeli strike on a school in Gaza.
“Israel names teenage soldiers killed in Hezbollah attack – as ’23 die’ in Gaza school strike,” the headline refers to the soldiers as teenagers and says they were killed by Hezbollah.
However, the report places Palestinian deaths in quotation marks and fails to specify that the strike on the school was conducted by the Israeli military.
As of 3 PM British time, the headline remained unchanged, and the story on Sky News’ X account referred to the soldiers as “teenage victims,” notably omitting any mention of their military status.
Following online outrage, the headline has since been changed to, “Israel names soldiers killed in Hezbollah drone attack – as 23 killed in Gaza school strike.”
Hezbollah has claimed responsibility for the drone strike on a military base in Binyamina in northern Occupied territories, belonging to the Israeli army’s Golani Brigade, which killed at least four Israeli soldiers and wounded others.
On Sunday evening, a Sky News segment faced significant backlash for failing to disclose that the strike targeted a military base.
Hezbollah sayid its strike was in retaliation for Israel’s bombing of central Beirut on Thursday, which killed at least 22 people. Israel has killed over 2,300 people in Lebanon since October 8, 2023.
