DayofPal– Hamas movement has strongly decried German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock’s recent remarks supporting Israel’s right to defend itself through killing Gazan civilians.
The movement labeled Baerbock’s comments as “outrageous,” arguing that they offer a troubling justification for the ongoing acts of genocide in Gaza, despite the significant civilian toll.
In a parliamentary address on Tuesday, the German Foreign Minister defended Israel’s military atrocities against Gaza civilians under the banner of “self-defense.”
She stated, “I made it clear at the United Nations that civilian locations can lose their protected status because terrorists exploit that,” adding that “Self-defense means not only attacking terrorists but destroying them.”
In a Wednesday statement, Hamas said, “We consider this brazen statement a blatant violation and a clear infringement of the 1948 Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide, and a clear acknowledgment of complicity in Israel’s ongoing assault.”
Hamas added that such remarks act “as a cover for the Zionist occupation army to commit more acts of genocide against our people, including innocent civilians, children, women, the elderly, and the sick, for over a full year.”
Hamas expressed that it’s profoundly appalled by the German statement, which “reflects a Zionist mindset stripped of human values and principles. It lays bare the reality of Germany’s position, which not only supports but also contributes to the crimes of starvation, thirst, and genocide against our people in the Gaza Strip.”
The movement bears the German government full responsibility for the serious consequences of its remarks and its political, legal, ethical, and humanitarian implications.
It further called on the International Court of Justice to consider this minister’s statement as “additional evidence of German government’s complicity in the genocide.”
Germany accounts for nearly 30 percent of arms sales to Israel, positioning itself as the largest supplier of weaponry to the Israeli army after the United States.
On this regard, Hamas urged the immediate implementation of emergency measures to halt all arms exports to the Zionist entity.
Hamas also called for a reversal of Germany’s dismissal of Nicaragua’s lawsuit regarding its violation of the 1948 Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide.
