Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu declared plans to launch a massive attack in Lebanon.
Israel is “on the verge of a broad and strong operation on the northern front”, a senior official in the Israeli government said.
“No date has yet been set, but it is expected in the near future,” he added Israel’s cabinet is expected to meet this week to discuss the situation.
According to the source, Netanyahu believes a full-scale war in Lebanon won’t diminish Israel’s military pressure on Hamas in Gaza.
However, Defense Minister Yoav Gallant disagrees and has said forces will need to be redeployed from the war-battered Palestinian territory.
In response, Hezbollah’s deputy leader Naim Qassem has warned Israel that a full-scale war on Lebanon would cause “large losses on both sides” and displace hundreds of thousands of more Israelis in the country’s north.
Qassem, speaking in the Lebanese capital, Beirut, said Hezbollah has no intention of going to war, “as we consider that this would not be useful”, according to the AFP news agency.
“However, if Israel does unleash a war, we will face up to it – and there will be large losses on both sides,” he said.
Tension has been escalated on Lebanon-Israel borders since Israel launched its deadly war on Gaza last October.
