Palestinians hace demanded an international investigation into the alleged death “under torture” of a Gazan doctor while in Israeli custody, following his abduction from the Gaza Strip early this year.
Dr. Iyad Rantisi, who served as the director of the maternity department at Kamal Adwan hospital, was tortured to death in November, six days subsequent to his arrest by the Israeli army at a checkpoint in the Gaza Strip while complying with orders by the military to flee northern Gaza to the south, including evacuating hospitals.
According to Haaretz, Rantisi died at an interrogation facility run by the Shin Bet, Israel’s internal intelligence agency. A court in ‘Israel’ had banned publication of details about his death for six months.
The Gaza-based government’s media office strongly denounced Rantisi’s assassination and has urged immediate scrutiny by relevant international bodies.
It asserted that Dr. Rantisi’s demise is emblematic of a broader pattern of Israeli offenses targeting Palestinian medical professionals in Gaza.
According to reports from the media office, Israeli military atrocities have resulted in the killing of nearly 500 Palestinian medical personnel and the detention of 310 others amidst the ongoing war.
Rantisi is the second known Palestinian doctor to die in Israeli custody as physicians reportedly face increased abuse and torture by interrogators and guards.
According to the Palestinian Prisoners’ Society, Palestinian surgeon and professor of orthopaedic medicine, Dr. Adnan Al-Bursh was tortured to death while in Israeli detention last April.
The Palestinian health ministry on Tuesday demanded that the fate of the remaining doctors in detention be urgently disclosed.
“The Ministry of Health calls on all international and human rights institutions to reveal the fate of dozens of health personnel who were kidnapped from hospitals while carrying out their humanitarian duty,” it said in a brief statement.
