Dozens of Palestinian homes were submerged, and multiple roads have been rendered impassable due to heavy rainfall in various regions of the Gaza Strip on Wednesday. The Meteorological Department has issued warnings that these rains will persist, often accompanied by thunderstorms.
Sources on the ground reported extensive flooding in Jabalia, located in the northern part of the Gaza Strip, as well as in several neighborhoods within Gaza City itself. The al-Shatee refugee camp, situated to the west of the city, has also been severely affected, particularly in low-lying areas. The heavy rains have resulted in significant damage to shops, causing both property and financial losses to their owners.
One of the most pressing issues has been the inundation of numerous roads throughout the region. Rainwater has collected to such an extent that it has become nearly impossible for citizens and vehicles to navigate, exacerbating the already dire situation. In addition to the flooding, strong winds have led to the toppling of trees and billboards, adding to the challenges faced by the people of Gaza.
This annual predicament is not new to residents of the Gaza Strip. Worn-out infrastructure and poorly-maintained rainwater drainage culverts have contributed to the region’s recurring flooding issues. These problems have been further exacerbated by the repeated the Israeli occupation attacks the Strip has endured.
While there is no immediate solution to the ongoing challenges posed by heavy rains and flooding in Gaza, it is evident that the situation calls for comprehensive infrastructure development and investment in better drainage systems to protect both lives and livelihoods in the future.
