Dire Situation in Israeli Prisons as Palestinian Administrative Detainees Go on Hunger Strike

The Commission of Detainees and Ex-Detainees Affairs representative, Abdul Qader Al-Khatib, expressed deep concern on Saturday, August 12, 2023, about the extremely critical conditions prevailing within Israeli occupation prisons. This concern is exacerbated by the increasing number of administrative detainees who have embarked on hunger strikes.

Al-Khatib emphasized that the situation inside the Israeli prisons was grim, especially given the uncertain fate of the hunger-striking prisoners. The occupation’s previous intransigence, notably in the case of the late prisoner Khader Adnan, has cast shadows over the well-being of the detainees.

He underscored the unity among the prisoners and stressed that those on hunger strike should not be left alone. He predicted that the coming days would witness heightened activism and solidarity events in support of the hunger-striking prisoners, aimed at exerting pressure on the Israeli occupation authorities.

According to the Palestinian Prisoners Club, the number of administrative detainees on hunger strike in Israeli prisons has risen to 13. The detainees have been on various durations of hunger strikes.

The Palestinian Prisoners Club reaffirms that the escalation of hunger strikes comes in response to the Israeli authorities’ unrelenting use of administrative detention, which has led to over 1,200 detainees being held without charge or trial. This number is the highest in years, surpassing figures from the Al-Aqsa Intifada.

The Israeli occupation issued 1,978 administrative detention orders since the beginning of 2023, with July witnessing the highest number, reaching 370 orders.

Prisoner Enters His 20th Year behind Bars

Adding to the gravity of the situation, Mohammed Fathi Thaib Ayyoush, a 48-year-old Palestinian from the town of Arraba in southern Jenin, entered on Saturday his 20th year in Israeli occupation prisons.

Director of the Prisoners Club in Jenin, Montaser Samour, stated that Ayyoush had been incarcerated since 2004. The Israeli occupation sentenced him to life imprisonment.

Furthermore, Samour revealed that the Israeli forces had demolished the family home of Ayyoush in the town of Arraba on December 19, 2004. Tragedy struck when his mother passed away in 2007, unable to visit her son due to her physical condition. The situation worsened as his father also passed away in 2015.
