Finland and the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) have inked a Multi-Year Agreement (MYA) for the 2023-2026 period, which will bring in a total of EUR 20 million.
This new Memorandum of Understanding (MYA) reinforces the strong and successful relationship between UNRWA and Finland, which has been in place for a long time. It extends the 2019-2022 MYA, which included an annual donation of EUR 5 million to the Agency’s Programme Budget. This new MYA expresses Finland’s commitment to UNRWA and its backing of the rights of Palestine refugees.
Ambassador Päivi Peltokoski from the Representative Office of Finland in Ramallah emphasized the importance of UNRWA’s work with Palestine refugees, particularly concerning basic services such as education and health care. Finland is a consistent and dependable supporter of UNRWA, and it is imperative that UNRWA continues to receive the necessary funds, political backing, and stability to achieve its primary mission.
Karim Amer, the UNRWA Director of Partnerships, expressed appreciation to the government of Finland on behalf of the Agency for their reliable, unrestricted and anticipatory funding given at the beginning of the year. This faith in the Agency, particularly in this tumultuous financial period, is invaluable.
Finland increased its yearly commitment of EUR 5 million to the Agency in 2022 by adding an extra EUR 2 million. This allowed for the Agency to continue offering its core services, such as 140 health-care facilities, which resulted in more than 7 million patient visits and 706 schools providing education to over half a million students throughout the UNRWA’s five fields of operation.
