Germany raised concerns over the Israeli Knesset’s new vote for resettlement in the northern occupied West Bank on Wednesday, March 22, 2023.
In a statement, the German Foreign Ministry said that the German government is very concerned about this move.
The foreign ministry also warned against the ‘dangerous step’ which aggravates the already tense security situation in the region.
“The decision contradicts with the intention of the agreement reached between Israel and the Palestinians … in which they committed to refrain from unilateral steps,” the German Foreign Ministry said.
Last week, the Israeli Knesset voted to cancel the 2005 Disengagement Law, which banned Israel from constructing settlements in the northern areas of the occupied West Bank.
Rescinding the 2005 Law, the Israeli new government allows settlers to return to four settlements, evacuated in 2005, in the northern occupied West Bank.
The Palestinian Authority, Biden Administration, and the European Union condemned the step which contradicts ‘all resolutions of international legitimacy.’
Under international law, settlement activities in occupied Palestine are illegal. However, about 700,000 Israeli settlers live currently in more than 200 settlements built on Palestinian lands.
