The United Nations General Assembly’s Fourth Committee endorsed Friday, 11 November 2022 four resolutions in support of Palestine, including ones that called for the expansion of the UNRWA’s mission and denounced the illegality of Israeli settlements.
Six nations abstained from voting on the resolution, with 164 countries voting in favor of continuing UNRWA’s activities. A resolution on helping Palestinian refugees received support from 165 nations, with ten countries abstaining and only Israel voting against it.
Meanwhile, 160 countries voted in favor of a resolution on the property of Palestinian refugees and their revenue, while seven countries voted against the resolution, and seven countries abstained.
A resolution criticizing Israeli settlements and practices in the occupied Palestinian land, including East Jerusalem, and the occupied Syrian Golan, had 150 votes in favor, 8 votes against, and 14 abstentions.
Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates Riyad Al-Maliki welcomed the vote and the international support of the resolutions in favor of Palestine, which will be adopted later by the UN General Assembly.
Al-Maliki said in a statement that the positive vote of the countries comes in light of Israel’s systematic violations against our people and their rights and its lack of commitment to international law.
These verdicts, he asserted, uphold the fundamental rights of our Palestinian people, chief among them the right to self-determination and the right of the exiles to return home.
