Days of Palestine – Beirut

Commission 302 to Defend Refugee’s Rights on Saturday stressed that the UNRWA Commissioner-General’s statement about the fiscal deficit which poses a challenge to the payment of Palestinian employees’ salaries warns of acute danger.

The Commissioner-General of UNRWA had stated that despite receiving 165 million dollars in pledges during the UNRWA Pledging Conference that convened in New York, the financial deficit for 2022 is more than 100 million dollars.

Ali Huwaidi, director of Commission 302 to Defend Refugee’s Rights pointed out that the pledges only promise to donate whose time of fulfillment cannot be predicted.

“The effect of the ongoing Israeli and American lobby on the donor countries was obvious in UNRWA Pledging Conference,” Huwaidi underlined, adding that Arab countries had support, down their financial support especially the UAE which completely cut off its support in February 2022.

Huwaidi said that the Commissioner-General’s announcement that the employees’ salaries might not be paid after September poses an extreme danger, adding that the UNRWA will have to borrow money to pay the employees’ salaries and provide its services.

He welcomed the political support that the Commission received in the meetings of the UNRWA Advisory Commission held in Beirut and in the UNRWA Pledging Conference, calling on the donor countries to assume their responsibility and provide financial support for Palestinian refugees.
