A state of hypervigilance takes over the Palestinian occupied territories and Jerusalem considering with Israeli Police’s rejection of plans by right-wing activists to orchestrate a march outside Jerusalem’s Old City on Wednesday following recent confrontations between Israeli police troops and Palestinian worshipers
The march was announced amid exacerbated tensions surrounding the holy month of Ramadan, ‘Temple Mount’ as Passover and Easter, and as a result of Israeli raids in which numerous Palestinians have been killed and arrested in the West Bank.
According to a police statement, the request to hold the march was made “on short notice” on Monday, and one of the organizers was summoned for a meeting with authorities to arrange a new date and format. Organizers advertised the march even though it had not been permitted, according to the same statement.
The police decision was criticized by the president of Im Tirtzu, a right-wing organization that helped organize the march.
“All those who wanted to come to the capital [during Passover] suffered a mortal blow,” Matan Peleg told Army Radio. “We want to show there’s nothing to fear,” He said. MK Itamar Ben Gvir to “Safra Square” in Jerusalem to participate in the march of the settlement flags alongside the far-right fanatics
Meanwhile, Palestinian youth and families stand by ready in case the march does start.
For Jerusalem Day, extremist nationalists stage a “flag dance” in areas of the Old City, commemorating the city’s occupation when Israeli troops seized East Jerusalem from Jordan, then under its custodial, in the 1967 Six-Day War, including the Old City and its sacred sites.
These events come after the storming and distraction of the Al-Aqsa mosque, the third holiest spot for Muslims in Islam. As the occupation forces attacked the worshipers inside and arrested them. The occupation forces and the Israeli Ultranationalist groups aimed at provoking Palestinians as they trespassed the sanctity of the Al-Aqsa and its courtyard while attacking Palestinians with rubber-coated metal bullets, stun grenades, and aggressively clubbing the worshipers with their police batons.
It is worth mentioning that the current events share an uncanny resemblance to the situation in May 2021 when similar provocations sparked the flame of the 11-day war on besieged Gaza, during which Israeli occupation forces killed 313 Palestinians, including 71 minors: 236 in the Gaza Strip; and 77 in the West Bank (including East Jerusalem), and made grave destruction to infrastructures and residential building and press, according to resources
And indeed, the Palestinian resistance in a cryptic message: vows that in the case of performing the march and/or making animal sacrifices in Al-Aqsa that the occupation and these groups will suffer from the consequences
