DayofPal—At least 165 people, most of them children, were killed on Saturday morning in a US-Israeli air strike on Shajareh Tayyebeh primary school in the southern Iranian city of Minab.
The attack took place in Hormozgan province and has been described by witnesses as a “double tap” strike.
Survivors and first responders reported that after the first missile hit the school, staff moved a group of students to the prayer hall in an attempt to shield them from further harm.
Shortly after, a second missile struck the same area, killing many of those who had sought shelter, as well as two first responders and a parent who had rushed to the scene.
A medic from the Red Crescent said the school principal had contacted parents after the initial blast, urging them to collect their children.
“Only a small number of those who had taken shelter survived,” the medic said.
One staff member described the aftermath as overwhelming.
“I felt like I had gone mute. I couldn’t speak,” they said, recalling the sound of children crying and screaming in the wake of the explosions.
Days after the strike, US Secretary of War Pete Hegseth stated that Washington was “investigating” the incident.
Drawing on sources including Iran’s Gymnastics Federation, a handwritten list, and the Tasnim news agency, Middle East Eye compiled the names and ages of 61 of those killed.
The list includes 25 boys, 26 girls, eight women, one man, and a two-month-old baby.
Images from funeral ceremonies held on 3 March showed mourners gathered around small coffins and freshly dug graves, as families in Minab buried their children and relatives amid scenes of grief and anger.
The full circumstances of the strike remain under scrutiny as investigations continue.
