DaysofPal- As negotiations for a humanitarian truce in Gaza drag on, Israeli ground and air assaults on the besieged enclave have escalated dramatically, leaving scores of Palestinians dead or wounded daily.
Residential houses, schools, and shelters have become frequent targets of Israeli strikes, exacerbating the humanitarian crisis in the densely populated coastal strip.
Civilians Under Attack
According to Palestinian sources, the Israeli military continues its large-scale operation in northern Gaza while targeting civilian infrastructure across the region.
Ismail Thawabta, head of the Palestinian government media office in Gaza, described the toll of the latest attacks.
“In the past 48 hours alone, the Israeli army killed at least 115 Palestinians, most of them children and women,” Thawabta told The New Arab.
He added, “The army committed seven horrific massacres against Palestinians in Gaza.”
In one of the deadliest incidents, Israeli forces stormed the Khalil Oweida school in Beit Hanoun, a northern Gaza town housing thousands of displaced individuals.
At least 43 people were killed in the assault. In central Gaza, strikes on residential houses in the al-Nuseirat refugee camp killed 42 Palestinians on Saturday night.
Further south, 25 displaced Palestinians were killed when a sheltering school in Khan Younis came under attack. Additionally, four people, including a cameraman, lost their lives in a strike on a Palestinian civil defense site.
Humanitarian Catastrophe
Beyond direct attacks, Israel has maintained a blockade on Gaza, closing border crossings and restricting the entry of essential food and humanitarian aid.
“This systematic starvation policy is aimed at deepening the humanitarian crisis for more than 2.2 million people,” Thawabta stated.
The Gaza Health Ministry reported that the death toll has surpassed 45,000, with over 107,000 people injured since the war began.
In the last 24 hours alone, the ministry recorded seven massacres, leaving 52 dead and 203 wounded.
Hope for Ceasefire Fades
Despite ongoing indirect negotiations between Hamas and Israel, many Palestinians see little chance for a ceasefire.
Bassem Naim, a senior Hamas official, stated that the group remains firm on its core demands: the implementation of a permanent ceasefire, the withdrawal of Israeli forces, and the right for internally displaced Palestinians to return to their homes.
“We are ready to show some flexibility, but we won’t abandon our fundamental demands,” Naim said.
He also expressed cautious optimism about the potential influence of the incoming U.S. administration under President-elect Donald Trump, citing his campaign rhetoric about ending wars in the region.
Lives in Limbo
For many Palestinians, the ongoing violence has shattered any hopes for respite. Mohammed Alian, a resident of the al-Nuseirat refugee camp, lamented the cyclical nature of the violence. “Every time there is talk of a ceasefire, the Israeli army escalates its crimes against civilians,” he said.
Growing Crisis
As the assault on Gaza intensifies, the humanitarian situation continues to deteriorate. With negotiations stalled and the death toll rising, the prospect of peace remains elusive, leaving millions of Palestinians trapped in a relentless cycle of violence and despair.
