DayofPal– Egypt has launched a behind-the-scenes diplomatic campaign to block former U.S. President Donald Trump’s proposal to displace Palestinians from Gaza to Egypt and Jordan, The Times of Israel reported.
According to the report, Egypt has warned that such a plan could undermine its peace treaty with Israel, which has been a cornerstone of regional stability and U.S. influence in the Middle East for decades.
Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi has not publicly responded to Trump’s proposal to forcibly transfer Gaza’s 2.3 million residents to neighboring countries.
However, unnamed Egyptian officials told the newspaper that Cairo has made it clear to both the U.S. and Israel that it will resist any such proposal and that the nearly 50-year-old peace agreement with Israel could be at risk.
An Egyptian official stated that this message was directly conveyed to the U.S. Department of Defense (Pentagon), the State Department, and members of Congress. Another official confirmed that Israel and its European allies—Britain, France, and Germany—had also received the warning.
A Western diplomat based in Cairo told The Times of Israel that Egypt had delivered the same message through multiple diplomatic channels, emphasizing that Cairo considers the plan a direct threat to its national security.
The Washington Post further reported that Egypt had informed the U.S. government that any attempt at forced displacement would trigger a military response from the Egyptian army.
Trump, speaking at a White House press conference with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, stated that the U.S. intended to take control of Gaza and displace its Palestinian population—a declaration that provoked widespread regional and international condemnation.
Since January 25, Trump has been pushing a plan to move Palestinians from Gaza to neighboring countries such as Egypt and Jordan. However, both nations have firmly rejected the idea, with additional opposition from other Arab states, regional organizations, and international bodies.
With Egypt’s staunch opposition and international criticism mounting, Trump’s proposal faces significant diplomatic and political hurdles, further complicating efforts to resolve the ongoing crisis in Gaza.
