The Palestinian Ministry of Education in Gaza reported that Israel’s onslaughts on the Gaza enclave since October 7 have claimed the lives of 4,895 Palestinian students, while 400 schools have been damaged.
Israeli attacks on schools and universities in the Gaza Strip are “systematic”, the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) in the occupied Palestinian Territories reported.
The UN office had previously said that about 92% of all school buildings in Gaza are being used as shelters for displaced persons, and more than 392 schools -79% of the total school buildings in Gaza- were damaged, including 141 schools that were completely destroyed.
The CEO of the American Near East Refugee Aid (Anera), Sean Carrollhas, indicated that the formal education system in Gaza has effectively halted, highlighting the term “scholasticide” to describe the intentional targeting of educational institutions in Gaza by Israeli occupation forces.
The Education Ministery also declared that it will not conduct high school graduation examinations for the current academic year, 2024-2023, for the first time in history due to the successive Israeli bombardment as well as the hazardous ground invasion of schools by the Israeli army.
The Israeli occupation army has continued its aggression against the Gaza Strip, with American and European support, since October 7. The occupation has killed more than 33,899 Palestinians and wounded 76,664 Palestinians, the vast majority of whom are children and women.
