DaysofPal- The Mayor of Rafah, Ahmed Al-Sufi, has issued an urgent appeal to international organizations and relevant authorities for immediate intervention to provide 40,000 tents and shelter units.
This request comes as thousands of Rafah residents are left homeless following the widespread destruction of their homes due to Israeli attacks.
In a press statement on Thursday, Al-Sufi described the humanitarian situation in Rafah as catastrophic. Tens of thousands of displaced citizens are forced to sleep in the open under severe weather conditions, enduring heavy rain and strong winds that have further worsened their suffering and torn apart the makeshift tents they sought refuge in.
According to preliminary assessments, approximately 90% of Rafah’s housing units have been destroyed, with around 52,000 homes sustaining varying degrees of damage. Al-Sufi emphasized that Rafah, now a disaster-stricken city, can no longer accommodate its displaced population without urgent and sustainable housing solutions.
He stressed the need for immediate international action to prevent further suffering, including the risks of homelessness, starvation, and the spread of disease.
The Rafah mayor urged the UN, humanitarian organizations, and international bodies to provide “at least the minimum essentials for dignified living before the disaster turns into an uncontrollable tragedy.”
“The international community must act immediately to secure 40,000 tents and shelters for displaced Palestinians in the city, who have been left homeless by the Israeli occupation,” he added.
“Rafah is dying, and any delay in response is a death sentence for thousands of families who have lost everything.”
According to the Gaza government media office, the Israeli army has destroyed nearly 88% of Gaza’s infrastructure throughout the Israeli war, including homes, vital facilities, and public services.
Israel’s genocidal war in Gaza, which has left the enclave in ruins and killed nearly 47,600 Palestinians, mostly women and children, came to an end on January 19 when a ceasefire agreement went into effect.
