Fifty-nine journalism professors hailing from prominent US universities are urging The New York Times to address concerns regarding a report detailing a “pattern of gender-based violence” during the October 7 attacks on Israel.
The professors felt compelled to pen a letter to the newspaper after encountering “compelling reports” that cast doubt on the veracity of the story.
In the letter, obtained and shared online by The Washington Post, the professors expressed their dismay at the apparent dismissal by The Times’ editorial leadership of these reports and their silence regarding crucial questions raised about both the reporting and editorial processes.
“We believe this lack of action not only undermines The Times’ integrity but also poses a risk to journalists, including American reporters operating in conflict zones and Palestinian journalists, of whom approximately 100 have lost their lives in this conflict thus far,” stated the professors.
A spokeswoman for The Times responded to the concerns by asserting that the paper had thoroughly reviewed the journalistic work behind the report and is confident that it met the publication’s editorial standards, as reported by The Post.
