Every year this day, May 1st, the Palestinian calender reminds people of the National Labours’ Day, which is celebrated nationwide in honour of efforts of 250,000 workers, according to 2023 statistics, in the West Bank and Gaza enclave.
This year isn’t like any other with a genocidal war by ‘Israel’ unfolds its ramifications accross the Gaza enclave, affecting the already devastating infrastructure, the people’s lives and the labour’s sector in particular.
On this occasion, the Government Media Office in the Gaza Strip reveals the scale to which 84,000 Gaza workers are affected, saying that the people are living unprecedented humanitarian conditions, with unemployment rates reaching 75% and poverty rates exceeding 90%, amidst the 18-year-long blockade.
According to Anadolu Ajansi’s report in the first quarter of 2023, before the war even started, 369,000 Palestinians were unemployed in both Gaza and West Bank.
Much aggressiveness hit the workers’ life as the Israeli army has targeted 15 sectors of employment in the Gaza Strip, leaving tens of thousands of workers losing their jobs and businesses.
These sectors include: housing and domestic, services and municipalities, commercial, industrial, governmental, agricultural, health, educational, media, entertainment and hospitality, communications and internet, transportation, and electricity.
The total direct preliminary losses of the genocide war on the Gaza enclave amount to $33 billion, according to the office.
The Israeli army has escalated its crimes and systematic violations against workers, including arrests, persecution, and torture, since October 7, according to Prisoners’ institutions.
Over 5000 Palestinian workers from all Palestinian areas have fell victims to the mass arrests and systematic crimes by the Israeli army. Since the start of 2024, ten Palestinian workers have been killed by ‘Israel’, and three others were tortured to death inside Israeli occupation prisons.
The media office head holds the occupation, the US administration, and the international community fully responsible for the harsh and inhumane conditions experienced by workers in the Gaza enclave on their international day.”
The office calls on all free world countries, international organizations, and the United Nations to fulfill their responsibilities by stopping the genocide against the Palestinian people in the Gaza enclave and providing direct support to the workers, especially those who have lost their jobs and livelihoods due to the war.
