DayofPal– After Palestinians in Gaza thwarted Israeli efforts to force their displacement, paying with the blood of tens of thousands of martyrs and the anguish of countless wounded, U.S. President Donald Trump has resurrected an old Israeli plan to displace them once more.
This comes despite the steadfast resolve of the Palestinian people to remain on the land they cherish, no matter the sacrifices, or how long are take.
Trump’s reintroduction of Gaza’s displacement plan comes amid a “fragile ceasefire” between Hamas and Israel, as hundreds of thousands of Palestinians in Gaza are returning to the northern areas.
Trump stirred old, contentious ideas by suggesting the immigration of over a million Palestinians from Gaza. In a phone call with King Abdullah II of Jordan, Trump proposed the possibility of resettling them in neighboring countries, with an added plan to discuss housing them in Egypt with President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi.
“Gaza is in chaos,” Trump remarked, stating that this move would address the situation entirely, effectively removing Gaza plight from the Middle East issues.
At the outset of the war in October 2023, Israeli officials unveiled a plan to forcibly evacuate Palestinians from Gaza, pushing hundreds of thousands towards Sinai amid bombardments and hunger. However, the Palestinian people resisted and stood their ground, while Egypt rejected the plan outright.
An Old Israeli Blueprint Resurfaces Trump’s recent comments echo long-standing Israeli policies aimed at depopulating Gaza and expelling its Palestinian residents. This plan fits into a larger, brutal effort to erase the Palestinian presence from their land—a strategy that has been repeatedly rejected by Palestinians and Arabs alike.
Experts view Trump’s words as coming at a critical moment—just a week after the ceasefire began—when opportunities for the return of displaced Palestinians are emerging, despite the destruction caused by Israel’s ongoing war, which has left over 70% of Gaza’s buildings in ruins.
Palestinian and Arab leaders have firmly rejected Trump’s renewed displacement proposal. Palestinian factions, both official and grassroots, have united in opposition to such plans, seeing them as an attempt to liquidate the Palestinian cause.
While Egypt and Jordan have yet to respond to Trump’s remarks, both have made their positions clear in the past. Egyptian President El-Sisi has repeatedly rejected any scheme to displace Palestinians, while King Abdullah II of Jordan has declared the idea of resettling Palestinians in Jordan a “red line.”
Expert Dr. Ibrahim Abu Jaber emphasized that displacement has been a core issue in Israeli politics for years.
“Everyone in Israel is eager to displace as many Palestinians as possible,” he explained, noting that even parts of the Israeli left support such measures as a “solution” to the current dilemmas.
However, Dr. Abu Jaber believes that this plan will not succeed, as Palestinians continue to reject any form of forced displacement.
Throughout Gaza, Palestinians have remained resolute in their determination to return to their homes. After months of displacement, they line the streets, waiting for the moment when they can reclaim their homes and towns, many of which have been under occupation since 1948.
For 15 months, Israel attempted to push Palestinians out of Gaza, employing mass displacement orders and deadly airstrikes, but despite facing death and starvation, the people of Gaza stood firm and foiled those plans.
Dr. Abu Jaber points out that implementing such a plan would not only clash with any future settlement but would also be met with fierce resistance from the Palestinian people.
“Thousands would rather die than leave,” he says, emphasizing that Palestinians are unwavering in their rejection of any experiment aimed at uprooting them from their land.
Despite years of repeated attempts to forcibly displace them, the Palestinian people remain rooted in their land, continuing to resist in the face of occupation. Their national rights are non-negotiable, and they will never relinquish their claim to the land they’ve always called home.
