The World Health Organization (WHO) Regional Director for the Eastern Mediterranean, Hanan Balkhy, has highlighted a critical health crisis looming in Gaza, stating that between 7,000 and over 11,000 Palestinian patients require immediate medical evacuation.
Speaking in Geneva, Balkhy emphasized the urgent need for these patients to access specialized treatment in advanced medical facilities.
In the context of WHO commitment to ‘leaving no one behind,’ she remarked that they are already witnessing a substantial number of individuals being left behind in Gaza. She further underscored the additional strain on already fragile healthcare systems in neighboring countries, noting the significant challenges that lie ahead.
Balkhy stressed the necessity of achieving peace to address this crisis effectively, concluding that “If we do not have peace, that’s going to be an extremely challenging situation. We need peace within the borders to open up.”
According to Gaza’s government media office, The already-deteriorated health system in Gaza has been collapsed in this war. 160 health institutions were targeted by the Israeli occupation.
33 hospitals have been rendered out of service by the Israeli attacks, 55 of health centers that the occupation took over are now out of service. 130 ambulances were targeted by the Israeli airstrikes.
All of the mentioned destruction has left 78,827 wounded people in need of to travel for “life-saving and dangerous” treatment, 11,000 of whom are in need to conduct medical operations.
Furthermore, 10,000 cancer patients are at verge of death and need treatment. 350,000 chronic patients are at risk due to non-administration of medications.
