DaysofPal- The World Health Organization (WHO) has called for the immediate and unhindered entry of essential medicines and medical supplies into the Gaza Strip, warning that such access is critical to begin rebuilding the territory’s devastated healthcare system.
In a statement posted on the platform X, WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus highlighted the worsening humanitarian conditions in Gaza, which has been under an Israeli blockade for nearly two decades, with restrictions tightening significantly over the past three years.
Ghebreyesus noted that the WHO has supported the establishment of a new family health center in northern Gaza, an area where medical services remain extremely limited and large segments of the population struggle to access care. The center is designed to bring essential health services closer to residents, addressing urgent needs in a region facing severe shortages.
He emphasized that health needs across Gaza are immense and reiterated the organization’s appeal for the immediate entry of medicines and basic supplies. Ghebreyesus also stressed the importance of removing bureaucratic obstacles that hinder the delivery of critical medical aid and called for lifting broader restrictions on access to the enclave.
Israel has maintained a blockade on Gaza since 2007. Today, approximately 1.5 million Palestinians, out of a population of about 2.4 million, have been displaced after their homes were destroyed during the ongoing war.
Although a ceasefire agreement was reached following two years of genocide that began on October 7, 2023, the humanitarian situation remains dire. More than 72,000 Palestinians have been killed and over 172,000 injured, according to reported figures.
Despite the ceasefire, Gaza continues to face daily bombardment and severe restrictions on the entry of food, medicine, medical supplies, and shelter materials. Around 2.4 million people, including 1.5 million displaced individuals, are living under catastrophic conditions, with limited access to basic services and humanitarian assistance.
