Monday July 8th, 2024, the World Food Program (WFP) revealed that almost half a million people in the Gaza enclave have been facing “catastrophic levels of hunger” due to Israel’s genocidal war which enters its tenth month.
The WFP said on X that it helped one million people in June “but that’s not enough”.
One in three children in northern Gaza are acutely malnourished or suffer from wasting, according to UNICEF. Over 40 people had died of malnutrition in Gaza, including 29 children, medical sources said.
The WFP has called for a permanent ceasefire in the Gaza Strip, clarifying that “due to unreliable access and limited stocks, families often don’t receive the full [food] rations and frequency they need”.
According to the latest assessment of the Famine Review Committee of the Integrated Phase Classification (IPC), released on June 25, 96% of Gaza’s population of 2.2 million people face high levels of acute food insecurity through September, while 22%, over 495,000 people, face catastrophic levels of acute food insecurity.
“96% of the population faces extreme levels of hunger in the Gaza Strip,” The IPC report indicated.
Since October 7, the Israeli occupation has imposed a tight siege on the Gaza Strip, severely limiting the flow of life-saving essential food and medical items.
Israel’s war on Gaza has so far killed 38,0100 people and injured 87,705 others, according to Gaza’s health ministry, devastating infrastructure in the Palestinian enclave.
