DayofPal—The US House of Representatives has approved legislation allocating $3.3 billion in military assistance to Israel, reinforcing Washington’s long-standing financial and military backing as tensions escalate across the Middle East.
The funding, provided through Foreign Military Financing (FMF), was passed as part of the National Security, Department of State, and Related Programs Appropriations Act (NSRP) for 2026.
The legislation was included in a so-called legislative “minibus” that bundles multiple spending bills into a single package, allocating nearly $50 billion for the State Department, foreign aid, and security assistance.
The vote comes amid heightened regional instability, with US President Donald Trump reportedly weighing additional military action against Iran following a recent confrontation that included Israeli strikes and direct US involvement.
FMF allows the US government to purchase weapons from American defence contractors on behalf of foreign governments using taxpayer funds. Israel remains the largest recipient of the programme.
Under a 10-year memorandum of understanding set to expire in 2028, Israel receives approximately $3.3bn annually in US military assistance. However, recent assessments indicate that actual US support far exceeds this amount.
According to a report by Brown University, US assistance to Israel since October 2023 has reached nearly $34bn, factoring in additional military aid following Israel’s war on Gaza, its attacks on Iran, and US military operations conducted in coordination with Israel, including strikes in Yemen and the defence of Israel against Iranian missile attacks.
The passage of the bill was welcomed by the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (Aipac), which described the funding as evidence of unwavering bipartisan support for Israel in Congress.
