The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) has announced on the social media platform X that two-thirds of the schools it operates in the Gaza Strip have been struck since the beginning of the ongoing Israeli war. These schools, which have been serving as shelters for displaced Palestinians, have suffered severe damage, resulting in the deaths of 524 Palestinians,
“UN structures, schools, and shelters are not a target,” UNRWA stated emphatically.
The most recent incident occurred on Tuesday when the Israeli occupation military launched an attack on a UNRWA school located east of Khan Younis in southern Gaza. This assault resulted in the deaths of dozens of people seeking refuge within the school premises.
The continued targeting of educational and humanitarian facilities in Gaza has raised significant concerns among international observers and humanitarian organizations, calling for increased protection of civilians and adherence to international humanitarian laws.
