The UN agency for Palestinian refugees (UNRWA) announced on Sunday that the Israeli occupation has bombed or damaged 69% of schools housing displaced people within the Gaza Strip.
In a detailed statement, the agency highlighted, “According to the Global Education Cluster, 69% of school buildings where displaced families were seeking shelter have been directly hit or damaged.”
The agency further condemned the attacks, stating, “This blatant disregard of humanitarian law must stop. We need a ceasefire now.”
On Friday, the UNRWA revealed that more than 76% of schools in Gaza require significant reconstruction or rehabilitation to be functional again, as reported by the Global Education Cluster.
This organization, established in 2007 by the Inter-Agency Standing Committee and led by UNICEF alongside the local Child Protection Network, coordinates humanitarian education responses during internal displacement crises.
As of June 17, the Israeli war has led to the complete destruction of 110 schools and universities, with an additional 321 institutions partially damaged. The war has also resulted in the killing of over 10,000 students, according to the government media office in Gaza.
Despite a UN Security Council resolution calling for an immediate ceasefire, Israel has continued its offensive on Gaza, drawing widespread international condemnation.
Since the war escalated on October 7, more than 37,500 Palestinians, primarily women and children, have been killed, and over 85,900 have been injured by Israeli war machine, local health authorities report.
The prolonged war has left large areas of Gaza in ruins, exacerbated by a severe blockade restricting access to food, clean water, and medicine.
In a significant development, Israel faces genocide charges at the International Court of Justice. The court’s latest ruling demands an immediate halt to Israeli operations in Rafah, where more than 1 million Palestinians had sought refuge before the invasion on May 6.
