DaysofPal- The United Nations Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in the Palestinian territories, Francesca Albanese, said on Friday that “Israel” and the countries supporting it should bear the financial responsibility for rebuilding the Gaza Strip following the devastating war.
Albanese said “Israel” must pay for the reconstruction of Gaza, alongside key allies including the United States, Germany, and Italy, which she described as among Israel’s main arms suppliers.
“They must assume responsibility,” she said.
Albanese also called for an investigation into Britain’s support for Israel, particularly through the use of British military bases in southern Cyprus.
She urged a comprehensive inquiry into Britain’s involvement in the ongoing genocide in Gaza.
She said the situation in Palestine cannot be understood without examining the region’s colonial past, adding that the events since October 7, 2023, have exposed the brutality of what has unfolded over the past two years.
Albanese described the current reality as a reflection of “cultural hegemony” and said many Israeli practices are an extension of Britain’s colonial legacy in Palestine.
According to Albanese, Israel’s use of administrative detention and torture against Palestinians mirrors methods previously employed by British authorities during the mandate period.
She warned that the humanitarian crisis in Palestine continues to worsen and called on the international community to activate accountability mechanisms without delay.
The UN official also addressed sanctions imposed on her by the US administration, saying they have had a severe impact on her personal and professional life.
She said that under the US legal system, those sanctioned are treated “as criminals,” barred from traveling to the United States and even prevented from opening bank accounts.
She noted that the consequences of such sanctions extend beyond the US and apply globally.
With US backing, the Israeli occupation has been waging a genocidal war in Gaza since October 2023, according to Albanese.
The Israeli genocidal war has so far killed more than 70,000 Palestinians, wounded over 171,000, and destroyed around 90 percent of Gaza’s civilian infrastructure, with initial damage estimates reaching $70 billion, according to Palestinian figures.
