The United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) adopted a resolution on Friday calling for the Israeli occupation to be held accountable for committing crimes against humanity in Gaza.
This is the first time the UNHRC has taken a position on the ongoing war in the Gaza Strip since October 7.
The resolution expressed grave fears of perpetrating genocide against the Palestinians, calling for a halt to any arms sales to ‘Israel’ with 28 countries voted in favour of the resolution, 13 abstained from voting and six countries voted against it, according to reports by the European Euronews network.
In this regard, 36 congressional Democrats, including representative Nancy Pelosi, the former House speaker and a key Joe Biden ally, have urged a halt to weapons transfers to ‘Israel’ in a letter they signed to the president Joe Biden and the secretary of state Antony Blinken.
“In light of the recent strike against aid workers and the ever-worsening humanitarian crisis, we believe it is unjustifiable to approve these weapons transfers,” the letter said.
Ireland’s 15-billion-euro Strategic Investment Fund (ISIF) is set to divest from six Israeli companies, including major banks, due to their involvement in the occupied Palestinian territories, announced Finance Minister Michael McGrath on Friday.
McGrath stated, “I have been advised by the National Treasury Management Agency (NTMA) that it has decided to divest from certain ISIF global portfolio investments in companies that have certain activities in the Occupied Palestinian Territory.”
